Rethink Your Job Descriptions for Better Hires

Improve your hiring success by making one practical change this month: review and refresh your job descriptions to attract the right talent.

This month, let's look at one practical change you can make to improve your hiring: your job descriptions. Many companies use outdated or generic descriptions. A fresh look can make a big difference in attracting the right people to your team.

Why Your Job Descriptions Matter

Your job description is often a candidate's first real impression of your company. It tells them what the role involves and what you expect. A good one makes people want to apply. A poor one means you miss out on great talent.

Think about the market in Felixstowe and Suffolk right now. We see strong demand in freight forwarding (17 live vacancies), warehousing (8), and transport (6). Candidates have choices. Your description needs to stand out. It needs to be clear, engaging, and accurate.

Make Your Descriptions Realistic and Appealing

Often, job descriptions list every single task and an endless list of "must-have" skills. This can scare off good candidates. Focus on the core responsibilities and essential skills. What does someone *really* need to do and know from day one?

Also, check your salary expectations. Our median advertised salaries show a varied picture: freight forwarding at £33,500, warehousing at £32,500, transport at £43,750, and driving at £48,750. Make sure your offer is competitive. If it's not, you risk losing candidates to other local employers. Be transparent about salary ranges if you can. It saves everyone time.

What to do this month

  • Review a current job description: Pick one role you're struggling to fill or expect to recruit for soon.
  • Cut the fluff: Remove any corporate jargon or generic statements. Make it direct and clear.
  • Prioritise duties: List the top 3-5 key responsibilities. What will they spend most of their time doing?
  • Highlight benefits: What makes working for your company different? Is it the team, the progression, the location?
  • Check salary competitiveness: Compare your proposed salary or range with current market rates for similar roles in Suffolk.
