Onboarding: Make New Hires Shine

Good onboarding makes new staff feel valued and productive quickly, leading to longer retention and better results.

When you bring a new person into your team, the first 90 days are critical. It is your chance to make them feel welcome, productive, and committed to your business. A strong onboarding process sets everyone up for success, especially in busy sectors like freight forwarding and transport.

Prepare for Arrival

Before their first day, make sure everything is ready. This includes their workspace, IT equipment, login details, and essential documents. Assign a buddy or mentor from the team. This person can answer small questions and help them settle in socially. It shows you care about their integration.

First Day, First Impressions

Your new hire's first day should be well-organised and welcoming. Don't leave them waiting or unsure of what to do. Introduce them to key colleagues and explain their role within the team and the wider company. Outline the immediate priorities for their first week. A clear plan reduces anxiety and helps them feel engaged.

Structured Integration and Training

Break down their initial training into manageable chunks. In roles like freight forwarding or warehousing, there's often a lot to learn about systems and processes. Provide specific training on company software, safety procedures, and customer service standards. Schedule regular check-ins, perhaps weekly for the first month, to see how they are getting on and address any concerns. This structured approach helps them build confidence.

What to do this month

  • Review your current onboarding checklist. Does it cover everything from IT setup to team introductions?
  • Assign a 'buddy' system for any new starters coming in over the next few months.
  • Draft a 30-60-90 day plan for key roles you often recruit for, like a Freight Forwarding Operator.
  • Schedule a quick feedback session with any employee who started in the last few months about their onboarding experience.
  • Ensure all necessary health and safety inductions are scheduled for new joiners, especially in warehousing or port roles.
