Keeping Your Best Logistics Staff This Winter

Practical steps for Felixstowe and Suffolk logistics managers to protect key staff from competitors before year-end hiring starts.

Replacing skilled freight and transport staff right now is expensive, slow, and disruptive. Competitors along the A14 are actively searching for the exact skills your team uses every day. If you want to keep your best people into the new year, you need to act before they start looking around.

Know what your team is seeing elsewhere

Your staff know what the market looks like across Felixstowe and Ipswich. Right now on our desk alone, we have 19 live vacancies in freight forwarding, 9 in warehousing, and 5 in transport. Experienced operators do not need to look far to find alternatives.

Advertised pay rates also set clear expectations. Based on LME vacancies, median advertised salaries currently sit at:

  • £33,500 in freight forwarding (based on 23 roles)
  • £43,750 in transport (based on 16 roles)
  • £32,500 in warehousing (based on 14 roles)
  • £46,250 for driving (based on 10 roles) If a competent operator has not had a pay review recently, an advert offering these figures down the road is hard to ignore. Pay does not create loyalty on its own, but falling behind the local going rate will always push people towards the door.

Why operations staff actually walk

Money opens the door, but day-to-day frustration is usually what makes someone update their CV. In busy shipping and logistics offices, good people leave for very predictable reasons:

  • Unspoken burnout: Pre-Christmas volumes always stretch teams. When people repeatedly cover extra desks without extra support, they look for an exit.
  • Silent work: In import clearances and fleet routing, doing the job brilliantly often means nothing went wrong. Managers notice errors, but rarely praise a week where everything ran smoothly.
  • Nowhere to go: If an ambitious clerk sees no route into senior management—where local median salaries reach £42,500 across 6 roles on our board—they will find that promotion with a competitor.
  • Avoidable friction: Outdated customs software, poor warehouse kit, and rigid shift patterns grind people down over time. Listening to your staff and fixing small gripes costs very little, but it buys genuine loyalty.

What to do this month

  • Benchmark your core team: Check your salaries against current local medians—especially in freight forwarding (£33,500) and warehousing (£32,500)—before your 2027 budgets are locked down.
  • Hold a short, informal check-in: Sit down with your key operators this week. Ask what is currently making their day difficult, and commit to fixing one practical issue by Friday.
  • Plan winter cover early: Map out December and January holiday cover now so your most reliable staff are not left carrying the entire load.
  • Talk about the future: Have an honest conversation about career progression with anyone who has delivered steady results for more than eighteen months. If you want an objective view of how your pay and packages compare locally, get in touch with our team.
